Nemarniki Vineyard ∞ Chehalem Mountains AVA Reserve Pinot Noir
65 cases produced. $54
Named for Leonard Bernstein’s operetta of the same name (which was based on the 1759 novella by Voltaire), Candide is comprised of two heritage clones of Pinot Noir—74.9% Wadenswil and 25.1% Pommard (10-year-old vines)—sourced entirely from Nemarniki Vineyard in the Chehalem Mountains AVA.The 2018 vintage was barrel-aged for 12 months in French oak. This wine showcases the richer mouthfeel and spicier characteristics of these two heritage clones of Pinot Noir, made more pronounced by a warmer growing season in the Chehalem Mountains AVA.
TECHNICAL NOTESNOSE: Black cherry, rhubarb, blackberry, green apple peel, white pepper.
PALATE: Balanced and complex with a long finish and black cherry, rhubarb, spice.
Winery Reflections Review: Tart Bing cherry, pine needle, rhubarb purée. Barely-ripe black raspberry, ground coriander, fresh cranberry. Exceptionally energetic and expressive wafts of wild strawberry, crushed orange, red plum, and pomegranate radiate with deep yet electric intensity as herbal and natural notes of eucalyptus leaf, mint, forest floor, and foraged mushroom intricately complicate the multidimensional display. A beautiful bouquet of blooming roses, dried lavender, and carnations gradually arise to provide layers of lifted floral perfume further bolstered in aromatics by cardamom, nutmeg, and a range of pronounced yet delicate spices. Hints of iron and tilled soil eventually emerge carrying a thread of intriguing earthiness that plays in harmony with the bevy of high toned and youthful fruit.
Owen Bargreen Review: Sourced from the ‘Nemarniki Vineyard’ on the Chehalem Mountains AVA, this unveils lovely red florals alongside ripe red currants and earthy undertones on the nose. The palate is elegant and nicely textured with good freshness. Layers of Yakima cherry and pomegranate seed combine with peat moss and damp earthy tones on the palate. This is nicely made, elegant Pinot Noir. Drink 2021-2029 – 90
