Meet The Bellobang Cocktail, a new drink mixed from Bells Up Winery’s Firebird Syrah and Interrobang’s Sweet Vermouth No. 47. Both bottles can be purchased at Bells Up.
NEWBERG, OR (July 21, 2016) — Newberg’s Bells Up Winery and Interrobang have unveiled a new cocktail, “The Bellobang.” Mixed with two parts Bells Up 2014 Firebird Walla Walla AVA Syrah, one part Interrobang Sweet Vermouth No. 47 and an orange slice garnish, the cocktail highlights the full-bodied plum and blackberry characteristics of the Syrah with the sweet blackberry, rosemary, dark chocolate and coffee notes of the Vermouth.
The Bellobang was created by Bells Up winemaker Dave Specter and Interrobang CEO Carr Biggerstaff. The two were inspired to combine their handcrafted products together in a glass in May during the “Taste the Terroir: Local Food and Oregon Wine Pairings” class conducted by Kerry McDaniel Boenisch, director of the Oregon Wine Education Center. While presenting their respective crafts separately to the class, the two decided to experiment with different blends of the two, and The Bellobang was born.
“While Dave and Carr both make outstanding products from Oregon wine grapes, it was a special treat for the class participants to experience the process of creating a new cocktail—as well as to sample it,” said Boenisch. “The Bellobang reminds me of the best Oregon summer sangrias, perfect for celebrating long days, blue skies and sunshine at a casual gathering of friends during a barbecue.”
Available only in the Bells Up estate tasting room, 2014 Firebird Walla Walla Valley AVA Syrah is made from grapes sourced exclusively from one of the highest elevation vineyards in Milton-Freewater, Oregon—at 1,150 feet. On the nose, the wine evokes Australian black licorice, dark plum, lightly toasted tobacco, lilies and blackberry bramble. Austere and refined, yet full-bodied on the palate, the wine’s soft tannins ease into a smooth finish. Just 80 cases were produced.
Based on a centuries-old German recipe, Interrobang’s Sweet Vermouth No. 47 is hand-crafted from Willamette Valley wine grapes and fortified with Clear Creek Brandy, as well as infused with Wormwood, Gentian and 10 other organic or sustainable botanicals. The “No. 47” refers to the 47 attempts to perfect the production of the original recipe. Bottles can be purchased at Bells Up Winery, as well as at select retailers throughout the Portland area.
