2016 Candide – Library Release
Nemarniki Vineyard ∞ Chehalem Mountains AVA Reserve Pinot Noir

With only 33 cases produced, the 2016 Candide was offered exclusively to members of Bells Up’s Fanfare Club when it debuted in 2018. So chances are, you don’t have any. Named for Leonard Bernstein’s operetta of the same name (which was based on the 1759 novella by Voltaire), Candide is comprised of two heritage clones of Pinot Noir: 75% Wadenswil and 25% Pommard. The grapes were sourced entirely from Nemarniki Vineyard in the Chehalem Mountains AVA. The 2016 Candide packs a well-rounded mouthfeel with hints of spice that pop like fireworks across the palate.

Tonnelier Vineyard ∞ Yamhill-Carlton AVA Reserve Pinot Noir

This special, limited edition reserve pinot noir is named for Paul Dukas’ duet for French Horn and Piano, “Villanelle.” Distinguished by a layered, supple elegance, the 2016 vintage of this wine showcases the richer mouthfeel and spicier characteristics of Oregon pinot noir from the Yamhill-Carlton AVA. It combines equal parts free-run Dijon clones 115 and 777 (16-year-old vines), barrel-aged for 12 months in French oak. Tonnelier Vineyard is a 4-acre micro-site on sedimentary Willakenzie soil, which typically yields structured wines.

Willamette Valley Pinot Noir

The 2017 edition of Bells Up’s flagship Willamette Valley pinot noir—named for Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No. 1 in D Major “Titan”—combines 34.8% Chehalem Mountains Pommard (9-year-old vines) grown on wind-blown Loess with 32.6% Dijon clone 115 and 32.6% Dijon clone 777 (17-year-old Yamhill-Carlton vines) grown in sedimentary Willakenzie soil. Aged 12 months in French oak (32% new), this Pinot possesses the classic elegance and delicacy of cooler year Oregon Pinot noir.

Named for Igor Stravinsky’s “Firebird Suite,” these grapes were sourced exclusively from Summit View, one of the highest elevation vineyards in Milton-Freewater, Oregon—at 1,150 feet. This site’s vines are rooted in Ellisforde silt loam, a deep, well-drained glacial soil that produces full-bodied fruit with concentrated flavors and vibrant acidity. Aged 12 months in French oak.
