Named for Leonard Bernstein’s operetta of the same name (which was based on the 1759 novella by Voltaire), Candide is comprised of two heritage clones of Pinot Noir: 71% Wadenswil and 29% Pommard. The wine was then barrel aged 12 months in French oak. The grapes were sourced entirely from 9-year-old vines in Nemarniki Vineyard in the Chehalem Mountains AVA.

REVIEW: From the loess soils of Nemarniki Vineyard along Laurel Ridge comes this spirited Pinot Noir. Exhibiting aromas of black raspberry jam, it’s zesty after 12 months in 44% new French oak. Broad and mouthfilling on the palate with sweet red cherry, raspberries, cola, underlying oak and exotic spices cap the finish. (Source: Ellen Landis, Great Northwest Wine)
REVIEW: The 2017 Bells Up ‘Candide’ Pinot Noir was sourced from the Nemarniki Vineyard in the Chehalem Mountains AVA and is a really good release by the talented former lawyer, Dave Specter. Fresh, vibrant and full of bright acidity, while this might be a bit lean for some, the length and elegance of the wine, with its pretty red fruits and saline driven terroir, cannot be denied. High-toned and fantastic to enjoy in its youth, I can see this cellaring well over the next decade — but why wait? Drink 2020-2028 – 91 (Source: Dr. Owen Bargreen, Washington Wine Blog)
