On Saturday, May 21 ONLY, from 11 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Ember and Vine—Portland’s wood fire and wine experience aficionados—will create and serve a selection of small bites paired with Bells Up Winery wines. Pitmaster Sean Martin and Sommelier Mary Cressler, co-founders of Ember and Vine, have created a unique small bites menu to complement Bells Up’s handcrafted wines. Smoked and prepared on-site, the delectable morsels include Carlton Farms pulled pork crostini and Chorizo Verde smoked sausages among other tasty treats.
During the event, Bells Up owner and winemaker David Specter will pour five wines:
- 2014 Rhapsody Pinot Blanc
- 2015 Prelude Rosé of Pinot Noir
- 2013 & 2014 Titan Pinot Noirs
- 2014 Firebird Syrah
The fee for guests who prefer to only sample wines is $15 per person, deducted from a $75 purchase; Members of Bells Up’s Fanfare Club enjoy complimentary wine tastings throughout the event. The optional Ember and Vine small bites pairing is an additional $15.
“The Ember and Vine pairings are a fun and exceptionally tasty way for us to kick off our First Anniversary celebration,” says Specter, noting that May 21 is the first of a series of five public open house days held during two consecutive weekends. In addition to Saturday’s event, the winery’s estate tasting room will be open for wine tastings from noon to 4:00 p.m. again on Sunday, May 22, and again the weekend of Memorial Day (May 28, 29 and 30).

Located in the Chehalem Mountains AVA, Bells Up Winery is housed in a recently renovated pole barn at 27895 NE Bell Road at the intersection of Zimri Drive. The label is one of Newberg’s newest micro-boutique wineries—making approximately 400 cases annually—and is always open by appointment, but rarely open to the public.
Bells Up produces handcrafted, classically-styled Oregon Pinot Noir with grapes sourced primarily from micro-growers located on the northern side of the Willamette Valley. It also offers a small selection of other Oregon-grown and produced varietals.
The name “Bells Up” is a reference to a dramatic moment in classical music where the composer instructs French horn players to lift the bells of their instruments upward and project their sound with maximum intensity. Specter, a French horn player who performed in bands and symphonic groups throughout high school and college, says the winery is his “Bells Up” moment.
