Earlier this October, WorldAtlas published “6 Underrated Oregon Towns Worth the Drive in 2026” by Andrew Davey. Our adopted hometown of Newberg is one of the six, alongside Warrenton, Manzanita, The Dalles, Sisters, and Ashland.
The WorldAtlas article makes the case for Newberg as a “very fruitful gateway” to Willamette Valley wine country. It’s about 25 miles southwest of Portland, so it makes an easy base for exploring the valley.
A Private Tasting at Bells Up
Among the article’s Newberg recommendations: book a private wine tasting at Bells Up “to get to know what’s growing out here.” WorldAtlas describes us as a “family-owned operation that specializes in small-batch, handcrafted wines.” That’s a pretty good summary of who we are.
The article also mentions our Pinot Noir, Syrah, and Cabernet Sauvignon. The Pinot Noir comes from our estate vineyard in the Chehalem Mountains. The Willamette Valley is too cool to ripen bigger reds, so we source those from Summit View Vineyard in Milton-Freewater, Oregon, at 1,150 feet in the Walla Walla Valley AVA:
- 2022 Firebird Syrah, inspired by Stravinsky’s Firebird Suite
- 2021 New World Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon, inspired by Dvořák’s New World Symphony and exclusive to our Fanfare Club members
You can see all of our reds on our red wines page.
Your Hosts Are Also the Winemakers, Farmers, and Owners
Family-owned means it’s just Dave and Sara. We grow the grapes, make the wine, and host every tasting ourselves. Small-batch means about 600 cases a year, with many wines made in lots of under 100 cases. And private means one group at a time, by appointment, so your tasting is built around you.
The article rounds out a Newberg day with one our neighbors, the Allison Inn & Spa, which is just a two-minute drive from our tasting room.
Make the Drive
Thank you to Andrew Davey and WorldAtlas for including us. Fall is a beautiful time to make the trip, with harvest underway and the vineyards turning gold and red.
